The Los Angeles Lakers (L.A. Lakers) is a basketball club located in Los Angeles, California. It was founded in Minneapolis in 1947 and moved to Los Angeles in 1960. The name Lakers comes from the nickname of Minneapolis—The Land of Thousand Lakes, which refers to people who work or live in the Great Lakes of the Northeast United States.
The Lakers joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1948. The biggest feature of the team is that there are always stars associated with them. George Mikan was the team's early main center. Under his leadership, the Lakers quickly became the NBA's giants. In the 1960s, the arrival of Elgin Baylor and Jerry West enabled the Lakers to never miss the playoffs throughout the 1960s. In 1976, the Lakers received the nickname "Skyhook" Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. In the 1979-80 season, the Lakers drafted rookie Irvine Johnson, who replaced the injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the finals of the season and led the team to the championship. On October 12, 2020, the Lakers beat the Heat 106-93, winning the NBA championship with a 4-2 score.
